TOKYO, 16 September 2026 — Japan’s TOPIX closed Wednesday at 4,061.72 points, a rise of 24.56 points, or 0.61%, from 4,037.16 on Tuesday. The 15:30 JST figure on Yahoo Japan’s index page matches the dated closing entry in Investing.com’s historical table.
Most of the gain was present at the opening
TOPIX began the session at 4,056.77, already 19.61 points above the previous finish. Its closing value was another 4.95 points higher. On that arithmetic, roughly four-fifths of Wednesday’s final point gain was established by the opening gap, with a smaller net contribution from subsequent trading.
The benchmark reached 4,072.31 at 09:58 JST but ended 10.59 points below that high. A positive closing return therefore coexisted with a retreat from the strongest morning reading. The daily outcome and the change from an intraday peak answer different questions.
Back above Monday, by a narrow margin
Dated TOPIX history shows a 4,058.21 finish on Monday. Tuesday then removed 21.05 points. Wednesday’s 24.56-point advance recovered that loss and added 3.51 points, leaving the index about 0.09% above Monday. That small two-session net gain is more restrained than the single-day rebound might suggest in isolation.
JPX’s methodology weights TOPIX by free-float-adjusted market capitalization. The result measures a broad Japanese equity portfolio, but cannot establish the number of rising stocks without separate breadth data. It also differs structurally from a price-weighted benchmark such as the Nikkei 225.
Next comparison
Tokyo’s afternoon cash session has finished, making this a completed closing report rather than a revision of the morning story. The next useful test is whether the modest recovery above Monday’s level persists. All figures are price-index points; dividend-inclusive total-return performance is a different series.
