TOKYO, 14 September 2026 — Japan’s main equity benchmarks closed in opposite directions on Monday. Google Finance displayed the Nikkei 225 at 63,492.99, down 518.35 points or 0.81%, and TOPIX at 4,058.21, up 29.91 points or 0.74%, after the Tokyo cash session ended.
For the earlier session reading, see CapKet’s separate Nikkei 225 and TOPIX intraday report.
Nikkei 225 closes lower after gap-down
The Nikkei opened at 63,659.53 versus the previous 64,011.34 close, a calculated gap-down of 351.81 points or 0.55%. Its displayed session range was 62,726.18 to 63,691.53 before the post-close reading of 63,492.99.
TOPIX ends higher
TOPIX opened at 4,027.32 against a previous close of 4,028.30, a calculated gap-down of 0.98 point or 0.02%. It recovered to finish at 4,058.21 after trading between 4,018.03 and 4,062.82.
What the divergence shows
The price-weighted Nikkei and the broader, capitalization-weighted TOPIX can move differently because they have different construction and constituent weights. Monday’s closing figures therefore describe a split benchmark result rather than a uniform move across Japanese shares.
Data note: Final readings were checked after the Tokyo close using timestamped third-party market data. Opening gaps are arithmetic calculations from the displayed open and previous close. This is general information, not investment advice or an executable quote.
