Separating the opening jump from the rest of the day

Subtracting the reported gain from the close gives a prior closing level of 65,481.27. On that basis, the opening gap was 647.32 points, roughly half the final point gain. The benchmark then added a further 625.13 points between its opening level and finish. These are calculations, not additional exchange quotes.

The finish was 192.42 points below the high, but 739.24 points above the low. This describes a strong session without claiming that buyers maintained control at every moment.

Why a stock count and an index return are different

The Nikkei is price-weighted, so the number of rising stocks does not determine the exact size of its percentage move. A majority count establishes participation; constituent weights determine how individual changes combine in the benchmark. It would therefore be misleading to infer the return of an equal-weight portfolio from the headline alone.
