What the split can tell readers
Hang Seng Indexes groups HSI constituent securities into Finance, Utilities, Properties, and Commerce & Industry. The differing percentage moves show that a decline in the main benchmark need not mean every sector declined. They do not, by themselves, identify why prices changed or how many index points each sector contributed.
This report uses the main Hang Seng cash price index. The same provider page also lists gross and net total-return versions, but those levels are different instruments. Nor should the main HSI be confused with Hang Seng TECH, China Enterprises, a futures contract or the Hong Kong-dollar price of a constituent share.
