Zions Bancorporation reported third-quarter 2026 net earnings applicable to common shareholders of $262 million, up from $221 million a year earlier. Diluted earnings per share increased to $1.78 from $1.48, as the bank benefited from lower credit costs.

The October 19 release also shows a less straightforward lending picture: net interest income increased, but the margin earned on interest-producing assets narrowed. Readers therefore need to separate the credit contribution from the interest-spread result.

The accompanying Form 8-K, Item 2.02, identifies the October 19, 2026 earnings announcement and furnishes the release as Exhibit 99.1. The cover report and release belong to the same issuer announcement; they are not independent corroboration or a separate audited financial statement.

A provision is the accounting amount set aside for expected credit losses. A provision benefit reverses part of that expense; it is not new lending revenue. Zions recorded an $8 million benefit this quarter, compared with a $49 million expense a year earlier.

Net loan and lease charge-offs—the losses written off after recoveries—were $3 million, compared with $56 million in the year-earlier quarter. These are different measures: charge-offs describe realized loan losses, while the provision reflects changes in expected losses.

More interest income, but a narrower margin

Net interest income rose to $684 million from $672 million. Net interest margin fell to 3.23% from 3.28%. The dollar total can grow even when the percentage margin contracts, because the asset base and its mix also matter.

The year-on-year comparison should not be confused with the previous quarter, when reported net earnings were $452 million and diluted EPS was $3.05. Zions identified substantial securities gains in that earlier period, making a simple sequential profit comparison incomplete.

The next useful checks are credit costs and funding economics, not an assumption that one quarter’s improvement will repeat. This release establishes the bank’s reported financial results; it does not establish an expected share-price return.
