RTX increased its full-year sales and earnings outlook after third-quarter sales rose 11% to $25 billion. The aerospace group’s adjusted earnings grew faster than sales, but a separately disclosed cost recovery forms part of that improvement.

In its October 20 official results announcement, RTX reported GAAP earnings of $1.89 per share and adjusted earnings of $2.26 per share. The adjusted figure included $0.25 a share from cost recovery related to the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). Ignoring that benefit would make the earnings comparison incomplete.

GAAP refers to standard US accounting rules. An adjusted measure removes or changes selected items specified by management and should be read alongside its reconciliation, not substituted for reported earnings. RTX lists acquisition-accounting adjustments and restructuring or other significant items in the bridge between its two EPS figures.

Backlog is future work, not current-period revenue

RTX’s $340 billion backlog captures business yet to be recognised as sales. It is useful evidence of the work pipeline, but it is not a cash balance or profit already earned. Production schedules, delivery timing and contract execution remain important to converting it into future financial results.

For 2026, management now projects adjusted sales of $97 billion–$97.5 billion, compared with $95 billion–$96 billion previously. That is a raised annual forecast; the $25 billion quarterly figure is an already reported result. Keeping the time periods separate avoids overstating what has been achieved.

The practical follow-up is to track delivered sales, cash collection and the disclosed recovery separately. This article does not infer a guaranteed dividend, a stock-price gain or a market-wide aerospace forecast from one company’s results.
