Steel Dynamics reported third-quarter 2026 net income of $756 million, up from $404 million a year earlier, as steel shipments reached a quarterly record of 3.8 million tons. The industrial result combines higher reported profit with a larger physical volume of steel shipped.

In its October 19 release, the company reported net sales of $6.5 billion and diluted earnings per share of $5.26. Second-quarter 2026 net income was $534 million, with diluted EPS of $3.69; year-earlier third-quarter EPS was $2.74.

Sales measure the value of products and services sold. Net income is profit after the expenses recognized in the accounts. Diluted EPS allocates earnings across the weighted-average share count after allowing for potentially dilutive securities; it is not a cash dividend.

The company also reported $1.2 billion of adjusted EBITDA and $846 million of cash flow from operations. Adjusted EBITDA removes specified financing, tax, depreciation and other effects. It should not replace reported net income or be described as cash collected during the quarter. Operating cash flow is a separate statement-of-cash-flows measure.

What management said about operations

Management attributed the sequential improvement to stronger steel prices and execution across its steel operations. That is the issuer’s explanation of its results, not independently verified evidence of a current market-wide price movement.

The release also describes the continuing ramp-up of aluminum operations. It says all three cold mills are operational and expects a second continuous annealing and solution heat line to become operational early in the first quarter of 2027. That remaining timetable is a forward-looking expectation, not completed production.

Future reports will show whether shipments, margins and cash generation remain aligned as capacity ramps. No share-price response or analyst-consensus comparison was verified for this report. For another example of distinguishing reported performance from an alternative measure, see CapKet’s accounting-label explainer.

The reported $5.26 diluted EPS was below the company’s own September 17 guidance of $5.34–$5.38. That is a comparison with a dated issuer forecast, not an analyst-consensus estimate; the guidance should not be reused as a current earnings forecast.
