Netflix reported third-quarter revenue of $12.874 billion, an 11.8% increase from a year earlier, while its operating margin widened to 34.6%. The improvement came alongside a lower full-year advertising forecast, making the balance between subscription growth and the advertising rollout the central issue in its October 20 results.
The shareholder letter says operating income and margin exceeded Netflix’s own third-quarter forecast, primarily because of expense timing and a slight revenue upside. That attribution explains performance relative to its forecast; it should not be read as a complete explanation of the year-on-year margin increase.

Why advertising and expenses need separate attention
Netflix attributed the advertising revision to a slower-than-expected rollout of some advertising product capabilities. The figure is an annual revenue expectation, not cash already collected and not a statement that all planned capabilities are available everywhere.
Its fourth-quarter operating-margin forecast is 26.0%, including an approximately 120-basis-point impact from headcount reductions. A basis point is one hundredth of a percentage point. The lower fourth-quarter margin forecast should therefore not be confused with the 34.6% already reported for July–September.
Cash generation offers a different lens from accounting profit. Using the precise figures, $3,162.279 million of operating cash less $278.766 million of property-and-equipment purchases equals $2,883.513 million, or approximately $2.884 billion, of free cash flow. Netflix presents that measure outside GAAP, the standard US accounting framework.
Readers comparing earnings reports should keep reported results, adjusted measures and management forecasts in separate columns. CapKet’s W. R. Berkley results report illustrates a different case in which total profit and a per-share operating measure moved in different directions.
The next useful test is delivery against the advertising and spending assumptions, rather than treating a single margin reading as a guaranteed annual outcome. This report does not establish a stock-market reaction or an analyst-consensus comparison.
