W.R. Berkley’s reported third-quarter profit fell even as its alternative operating earnings measure improved. Net income available to common shareholders was $446.0 million, down from $511.0 million in the same quarter of 2025, according to its October 19 release.

Reported diluted earnings per share fell to $1.14 from $1.28. In contrast, the insurer’s non-GAAP operating income rose to $456.5 million from $440.2 million, and operating diluted EPS increased to $1.17 from $1.10. A headline that calls only one of these measures “earnings” would lose a material distinction.

What Berkley removes from operating income

The company defines operating income as net income excluding after-tax net investment gains or losses and related expenses, and after-tax foreign-currency gains or losses. It is a supplemental measure, not a second profit to add to the reported figure.

Investment income is also different from investment gains. Income includes returns such as interest earned from the portfolio, while gains or losses reflect other changes recognized on investments. The release reports net investment income of $383.5 million, compared with $351.2 million a year earlier.

Underwriting and investment results need to be read together

For its Insurance segment, Berkley reported pre-tax underwriting income of $237.7 million, up 10.6%. Underwriting measures the result of writing insurance after relevant claims and expenses; it is not total company profit. The group’s reported combined ratio was 90.8%, a measure relating claims and underwriting expenses to earned premiums.

Those figures help explain the underlying insurance activity without implying that future claims costs or investment values are known. Management’s expectations for future investment contributions remain forward-looking statements, not earnings already achieved.

No current share-price response or analyst-consensus comparison was verified here. For another practical example of this distinction, read CapKet’s reported-versus-adjusted earnings explainer. Comparing like-for-like measures is more useful than describing the quarter with an unlabeled beat-or-miss number.

Berkley’s October 19 Form 8-K, Item 2.02, identifies the announcement as its third-quarter 2026 results and attaches the earnings release as Exhibit 99.1. These are two records in the same issuer disclosure package, not two independent assessments of performance.
