GrafTech’s third-quarter loss widened as lower realized prices weighed on sales, according to the company’s 23 October 2026 earnings release filed with the SEC. Its planned factory closure in Mexico is intended to reduce future costs, but those prospective savings are not profit already earned.

Why adjusted EBITDA is not net profit
Adjusted EBITDA removes interest, tax, depreciation, amortisation and specified adjustments from the earnings calculation. It is a non-GAAP measure, not a substitute for the reported loss. A positive adjusted EBITDA figure can therefore coexist with a net loss and cash leaving the business.
The quarter included about US$14 million of restructuring and other exit charges associated with the planned Monterrey closure, most of them non-cash. The reported and adjusted loss figures should be compared on the same basis in both years.
Closure savings remain a forecast
GrafTech announced the planned closure in September. It expects a phased wind-down, with customer requirements moving to its French and Spanish facilities and connecting-pin production transferred to Spain. The company estimates annual cash cost savings of US$20–US$25 million, excluding one-time costs, with the full annual benefit expected in 2028.
That is an execution plan, not confirmation that the facility has closed or that the cost reduction has been realised. The company also described its weighted-average realized price as approximately US$3,900 per metric tonne, 7% below the prior-year quarter. The next useful checks are actual prices, inventory conversion and the progress of the wind-down.
