General Motors approved a new $20 billion multi-year share-repurchase authorization after reporting third-quarter net income attributable to stockholders of $3.335 billion, up from $1.327 billion a year earlier. Revenue increased 2.9% to $50.015 billion.

The October 20 results release says GM has completed the separate $6 billion buyback announced in January. The new authorization is permission for future purchases, not evidence that another $20 billion has already been spent.

A share repurchase pays selling shareholders when the company actually buys shares. A cash dividend instead makes a per-share payment to eligible holders. The two should not be combined into an assumed investor return, because purchase timing, share prices and dividend eligibility differ.

A narrower earnings range, not a blanket upgrade

GM narrowed its full-year adjusted earnings-before-interest-and-tax guidance to $14.5 billion–$15.5 billion from $14 billion–$16 billion. The lower end rose and the upper end fell; describing that change simply as a higher profit forecast would hide half of the revision.

The company increased its adjusted automotive free-cash-flow forecast to $11.5 billion–$12.5 billion from $9.5 billion–$11.5 billion. That is a management estimate of future cash generation on an adjusted basis, not cash already returned under the new authorization.

The issuer earnings presentation separately sets out the quarterly financial results and capital-return programme. It is another company record, not independent corroboration. GAAP net income, adjusted operating profit and cash flow answer different questions and should not be treated as interchangeable.

For another industrial report that separates shipped output from earnings, see CapKet’s Steel Dynamics quarterly results. GM’s next disclosures will show the pace of actual repurchases. Its authorization allows purchases to be suspended or discontinued at its discretion, so no completion date or guaranteed share-price effect is established.
