Gentex reduced its 2026 revenue and gross-margin outlook on 23 October after third-quarter sales came in below the prior-year level. Its earnings release shows why readers should separate a weaker reported result from the company’s unchanged adjusted earnings per share.

A narrower outlook, not an annual result

The revised revenue forecast is at the bottom of the previous range, while both ends of the gross-margin range are lower. Gross margin measures the share of sales remaining after the direct cost of goods sold; it is not the final net-profit margin.

The company’s forward estimates remain subject to sales and cost assumptions. They should not be described as revenue already secured or as a guaranteed level of profitability.

How to read the profit comparison

Reported earnings follow US accounting standards. Gentex’s adjusted measures remove specified impairment, acquisition-related and severance items described in its reconciliation. The unchanged adjusted diluted EPS does not erase the decline in reported diluted EPS.

Using the same measure in both periods avoids a misleading comparison—for example, putting this quarter’s adjusted number beside last year’s reported number. Sales, operating margin and net profit answer different questions and should be read together.

The release also records US$132.6 million of share repurchases during the quarter. That is actual disclosed spending, unlike the remaining capacity under a repurchase authorization, which does not establish that future shares have already been bought.
