BT launched its AI from BT business portfolio on October 1, bringing together AI Receptionist and a free AI Adoption Hub. The practical proposition is to help UK firms handle customer calls and assess AI tools—but the launch’s revenue-loss estimate should not be confused with proven product returns.
What is being offered?
BT says its receptionist tools can answer calls, handle routine questions and arrange appointments. The adoption hub provides guides and other materials for businesses exploring AI.
Its help documentation distinguishes two services: AI Receptionist requires BT Cloud Work, while AI Receptionist Everywhere is standalone. Buyers should confirm which version a quotation covers rather than assuming both have identical prerequisites.
The £3.7 billion figure has important limits
BT’s estimate of annual revenue lost to missed calls draws on a commissioned survey of 1,500 UK SME decision-makers conducted September 23–28. The model uses respondents’ estimates, annualises nine months to twelve and excludes people who answered “don’t know”.
For firms with 50–249 employees, it substitutes a revenue-loss-to-turnover ratio from smaller firms because the larger firms’ answers were judged implausibly low. BT calls the resulting figure indicative. It is not an audited total or a measurement of money recovered using AI Receptionist.
A useful way to test the service
CapKet analysis: Start a trial with a defined task, such as answering opening-hours questions or taking appointment requests. Check whether answers are correct, whether unusual enquiries reach a person and whether appointment details match the actual calendar. Include difficult calls rather than judging only an ideal demonstration.
Then compare the complete service cost with outcomes recorded by your own business. A call answered is not automatically a sale, and an appointment booked is not automatically one attended. Ask about recordings, retention and access controls before allowing the system to handle sensitive customer information.
Our AI finance-readiness explainer covers the broader distinction between allocating a budget and being ready to deploy a service.
