ABB reported a 40% rise in third-quarter orders to $12.055 billion, led by electrification demand and strong data-centre activity. Revenue increased 14% to $9.701 billion, but the improvement in operational earnings did not carry through to higher attributable net profit.

The October 20 interim report recorded net income attributable to ABB of $1.181 billion, down 2% from $1.208 billion. Its operational EBITA measure rose 24% to $2.026 billion. Using either figure alone would give an incomplete view of the quarter.

Operational EBITA is an alternative performance measure defined and reconciled by ABB. It adjusts earnings before interest, taxes and acquisition-related amortization for specified items. It is not equivalent to net income, which reflects additional financial, tax and other effects.

What the order figures do and do not show

The issuer reported a book-to-bill ratio of 1.24. Using the disclosed inputs, $12.055 billion of orders divided by $9.701 billion of revenue is approximately 1.24. A reading above one means orders booked exceeded revenue recognised during that quarter; it does not mean a 24% profit margin.

ABB attributed the order strength in part to triple-digit growth in its data-centre segment and disclosed a $32.256 billion order backlog. That pipeline still has to become delivered products, services and recognised revenue. It should not be reported as cash collected or profit already earned.

The corporate results page repeats the release and links to the financial information. It is another issuer-hosted presentation, not independent corroboration. ABB’s full-year forecast calls for comparable revenue growth in the low-teens range; that remains an outlook rather than a completed annual result.

For a separate manufacturing comparison of output and financial performance, see CapKet’s Steel Dynamics results. The useful follow-up for ABB is the relationship between orders, delivery capacity and cash generation, with operational and attributable profit kept visibly distinct.
