SYDNEY, 16 September 2026 — The S&P/ASX 200 closed at 8,696.50 points on Wednesday, adding 24.00 points, or 0.28%, to Tuesday’s 8,672.50 finish. The completed-session value is corroborated by ABC’s dated closing report and Investing.com’s daily table.
A partial repair, not a full reversal
Tuesday’s decline was 77.40 points from Monday’s 8,749.90 close. Wednesday regained approximately 31% of that loss, leaving the benchmark 53.40 points, or 0.61%, below Monday. The two-day comparison shows why a green session can still leave the recent direction negative.
According to the historical price table, Wednesday’s range extended from 8,668.10 to 8,705.60, a spread of 37.50 points. The closing level was 28.40 points above the low and 9.10 below the high. Those figures place the finish in the upper part of the day’s range without implying that the market rose continuously.
Individual shares did not move together
ABC’s closing coverage listed Pantoro Gold up 9.3% and Codan up 7.51%, while Life360 fell 5.46%. These are individual share returns, not a ranking of contributions to the index. Their contrasting moves illustrate the dispersion hidden by the benchmark’s modest net rise.
The index provider describes the ASX 200 as a float-adjusted benchmark of 200 large eligible Australian-listed stocks. Changes in larger weighted constituents matter more than an equal-sized percentage move in a smaller member.
After the auction
ASX schedules its closing auction around 16:10–16:11 Sydney time. The confirming Yahoo quote was updated at 17:18:44 AEST, after that process. This report records the final cash-index result, not SPI futures, and leaves the earlier morning post intact.
