NEW YORK, 14 September 2026 — The four major U.S. equity benchmarks ended Monday lower. The S&P 500 closed at 7,619.98, down 37.00 points or 0.48%, while the Nasdaq Composite finished at 26,186.41, down 146.62 points or 0.56%, according to closing figures reported by the Associated Press.
Dow and Russell 2000 closing levels
The Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 152.09 points, or 0.29%, to 52,421.20. The Russell 2000 index of smaller companies fell 11.71 points, or 0.40%, to 2,892.24.
Technology shares led the pressure
The Nasdaq recorded the largest percentage decline among the four benchmarks. The Associated Press reported weakness in artificial-intelligence-linked shares, while an early rise in oil and a brief move in the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield to 5% added pressure. Gains in parts of the wider market limited the index-level losses.
How the close compares with the open
CapKet’s separate U.S. opening report recorded the S&P 500 down 0.6%, the Nasdaq down 0.8% and the Dow lower by 0.3% at 10:00 ET. Monday’s closing figures show the S&P 500 and Nasdaq recovered part of their earlier percentage declines but still ended negative. The earlier report remains unchanged.
