Rio Tinto’s 14 October 2026 production review contains an important distinction: Oyu Tolgoi’s Q3 copper production rose 27% year-on-year, but consolidated group copper production was 205,000 tonnes—unchanged from Q3 2025 and 4% below Q2 2026. The figures appear in the official release and the full quarterly operations review.
The practical question is which business and comparison a headline describes. A rise at one mine does not establish the same growth for the group, and a volume report is not a revenue or profit announcement. This article explains the dated operating release rather than reporting new production on October 18.
The main production and sales measures
| Item | Verified information | Primary evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Oyu Tolgoi copper production | +27% year-on-year in Q3; +29% year-to-date | Source |
| Consolidated group copper output | 205 kt in Q3; 0% year-on-year; −4% quarter-on-quarter | Source |
| Group copper guidance | 800–870 kt for 2026; unchanged guidance, not an achieved outcome | Source |
| Global iron-ore sales | 90.8 Mt in Q3; +3% year-on-year; 100% basis | Source |
| Global iron-ore production | 89.7 Mt in Q3; +2% year-on-year; 100% basis | Source |
| Iron-ore units / scope | Mt means million wet metric tonnes here. The 100% basis differs from Rio’s economic ownership share | Source |
| Simandou rate | Approximately 10 Mtpa annualised production run-rate reached in Q3 on a 100% basis; not 10 Mt of actual quarterly output | Source |
Why the mine and group figures can differ
A mine-level comparison measures one operation. The consolidated production line combines the relevant group operations on the stated reporting basis. Both numbers can be correct while pointing in different directions. The review therefore does not support the claim that all Rio copper production grew 27%. Its year-on-year and quarter-on-quarter group comparisons also answer separate questions.
Sales, output and a run-rate are not interchangeable
Iron-ore sales of 90.8 million wet tonnes are a shipment/sales-volume measure, while 89.7 million wet tonnes is the separate production line. The report labels these on a 100% basis. Neither should silently become Rio’s attributable ownership volume or a dollar revenue figure.
An annualised run-rate expresses a pace as though it continued for a year. Simandou’s approximately 10 Mtpa rate is not evidence that 10 million tonnes were produced in that quarter. Future guidance also remains an expectation under the review’s stated conditions, including weather; it is not a completed 2026 result.
