A Ministry of Finance FAQ published on October 14, 2026 identifies 10955230 Canada Inc., whose parent is Fairfax Financial Holdings Ltd., as the approved strategic buyer for IDBI Bank. The transaction concerns a 60.72% holding. The document also sets out further RBI-related steps, so the announcement should not be described as proof of a completed ownership transfer.

What the official transaction figures say

Item Official figure
Stake being sold 60.72%
Government portion 30.48%
LIC portion 30.24%
Purchase consideration, rounded ₹52,878.08 crore
Government residual stake described in FAQ 15%
LIC residual stake described in FAQ 19%

The FAQ gives the purchase consideration as ₹52,878.0806181 crore; the table rounds it to two decimal places. The stake comes from existing government and LIC holdings. This consideration is therefore not the same as fresh capital paid into IDBI Bank, its revenue or its profit. The FAQ says the sellers will receive the proceeds in the proportion of their stakes being sold.

Why buyer approval is not the final step

In its answer on the next course of action, the FAQ says the successful bidder would present its credentials to the RBI in accordance with the fit-and-proper assessment at the expression-of-interest stage and submit a roadmap for compliance with the prescribed regulatory conditions. CapKet has not verified a subsequent completion notice. Neither a completed share transfer nor a final date for it is asserted here.

The FAQ describes government and LIC residual holdings of 15% and 19%, respectively, and says both would withdraw their board nominees and become public shareholders. These are the transaction arrangements described in the document, not a claim that all changes had already taken effect at the source-check time.

The background document is not a current market quote

DIPAM’s October 7, 2022 preliminary information memorandum had already described a 60.72% stake sale with transfer of management control, split into government 30.48% and LIC 30.24%. That older document provides the transaction framework; the October 14, 2026 FAQ is the evidence for the newly named buyer. Historical figures in the memorandum are not current bank financial results.

This report does not verify a live IDBI share price, an open-offer entitlement for public investors or the investment merits of buying the stock.
