Citigroup reported third-quarter 2026 net income of $5.2 billion and diluted earnings per share of $2.85 in its October 13 release filed with the SEC. Revenue was $23.8 billion. Its reported EPS growth of 53% requires context: the comparable quarter last year contained a goodwill-impairment charge that reduced the starting figure.

The comparison, on both bases

Measure Official figure / status
Q3 2026 reported net income $5.2 billion
Q3 2026 reported diluted EPS $2.85
Q3 2026 revenue $23.8 billion; up 8% year on year
Q3 2025 reported EPS $1.86
Q3 2025 EPS excluding notable item $2.24; non-GAAP comparison
EPS growth 53% as reported; 27% excluding notable item
Q3 2025 impairment $726 million pre-tax; $714 million after tax

The charge belongs to the prior year

The goodwill impairment was recorded in Q3 2025, not Q3 2026. Citi linked it to the agreement to sell a 25% equity stake in Banamex. Removing that prior-year item changes the comparison from reported EPS of $1.86 to $2.24. The current-quarter reported EPS remains $2.85 in this presentation; it is not an additional adjusted earnings amount.

The reported and excluded-item growth rates answer different questions. Using the lower reported prior-year base produces the larger percentage. The non-GAAP comparison is useful context, but does not replace the reported accounts. Citi also attributed EPS growth partly to a lower share count following buybacks, so EPS growth is not identical to profit growth.

What else to read

The filing reports higher revenue alongside lower reported expenses, partly offset by a higher credit-loss provision. Readers should examine the full expense and credit tables rather than treating the headline EPS increase as a complete account of risk. No analyst-consensus beat, stock-market reaction or future return is verified in this report.
