Alphabet reported a sharp increase in third-quarter sales, led by Google Cloud, but earnings available to common shareholders declined. Its 28 October results release shows revenue of $127.577 billion, up 25% from a year earlier, and common-shareholder profit of $26.170 billion, down from $34.979 billion.
The contrast matters: revenue records sales, operating profit measures the result after operating costs, and the bottom line also includes investment effects, interest and taxes. They should not be treated as interchangeable signs of performance.
The quarter in official figures
| Measure | Q3 2026 | Comparison or qualification | Primary source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue | $127.577 billion | Up 25% year on year | Issuer results, SEC Exhibit 99.1 |
| Google Cloud revenue | $30.709 billion | Up 103%; a business-segment figure | Segment revenue table |
| Operating profit | $40.576 billion | Up 30%; before the non-operating investment line | Financial highlights |
| GAAP profit available to common shareholders | $26.170 billion | $34.979 billion a year earlier | Consolidated income statement |
| GAAP diluted EPS | $2.12 | $2.87 a year earlier; not an adjusted EPS figure | Per-share earnings |
Why sales growth and profit diverged
The issuer recorded an $8.664 billion net loss on equity securities, compared with a $10.734 billion gain a year earlier. Total other income and expense moved from $12.759 billion of income to an $8.221 billion expense. This sits outside operating profit.
Total GAAP net income was $26.468 billion. After $298 million of preferred-stock dividends, $26.170 billion remained available to common shareholders. The latter is the relevant profit measure used alongside the reported common-share EPS; it must not be relabelled as total net income.
Cash flow is a separate check
Operating activities generated $42.290 billion of cash, while purchases of property and equipment were $51.355 billion. Alphabet’s non-GAAP free-cash-flow definition subtracts the second figure from the first: $42.290 billion minus $51.355 billion equals negative $9.065 billion. This liquidity measure is not an adjusted profit or adjusted EPS result.
A run rate is not a completed year
In official earnings-call remarks, CEO Sundar Pichai described a roughly half-trillion-dollar annual revenue run rate. That describes the scale implied by a recent period, not revenue already earned across an entire year.
The immediate reading is therefore mixed: the Cloud business expanded rapidly and operating profit grew, but common-shareholder earnings and the cash left after capital spending were weaker. Future spending returns and investment values remain matters to assess in later official disclosures, not outcomes established by revenue growth alone.
