TOKYO, 16 September 2026 — The Nikkei 225 ended Wednesday at 63,923.00 points, up 438.90 points, or 0.69%, from Tuesday’s 63,484.10 finish. Nikkei’s official index page identifies that value as both the closing level and the day’s high.

A recovery from the morning low

The benchmark opened at 63,672.13 at 09:00 JST, an initial gain of 188.03 points. It subsequently fell to 63,209.92 at 10:56, putting it 274.18 points below the previous close. The final result therefore reflects a recovery within the session, not an uninterrupted rise from the opening bell.

The distance between the low and the close was 713.08 points. Wednesday finished 250.87 points above its opening value, so more than half of the eventual point gain was added beyond the initial positive opening gap. These are comparisons of reported observations; they do not identify when every intervening move occurred.

What the closing gain restores

Yahoo Finance’s dated daily records put Monday’s close at 63,492.99 and Friday’s at 64,011.34. Wednesday recovered Tuesday’s small decline and finished 430.01 points above Monday, but remained 88.34 points below Friday. A positive day thus did not erase all of the decline across those earlier sessions.

The Nikkei is price-weighted across 225 selected Tokyo-listed companies. Its result should not be read as an equal-weighted return for Japanese shares, or as proof that every constituent advanced. This report does not assign the recovery to an individual company without verified contribution data.

A completed cash-session result

Tokyo’s scheduled cash session ended at 15:30 JST. Yahoo’s confirming quote carries a 15:45:03 JST timestamp; that vendor update time is distinct from the exchange close. The next session will test whether 63,923.00 is retained. This closing report is separate from the earlier opening observation.
