AGNC Investment Corp. reported a third-quarter net loss of $1.17 per common share as its tangible net book value fell 16.9%. For shareholders in the mortgage-investment company, the result shows why income from a portfolio and changes in its underlying value need to be read together.

The October 19 release covers the three months ended September 30, 2026. Comprehensive loss was $1.28 per common share, combining the net loss with $0.11 of other comprehensive loss. AGNC separately reported positive net spread and dollar roll income of $0.37 per common share, a non-GAAP measure.

Why the income measures differ

Comprehensive income includes specified valuation changes recorded outside net income. AGNC’s spread-and-dollar-roll measure instead focuses on selected portfolio earnings and makes adjustments described in the release. These figures answer different questions: the positive $0.37 should not be called the company’s GAAP earnings or added to the reported loss.

Tangible net book value is the accounting value attributable to common shareholders after excluding goodwill, expressed per share. It fell by $1.45, from $8.58 at June 30 to $7.13 at September 30. It is not the stock’s exchange price.

Dividends did not eliminate the book-value decline

AGNC declared $0.36 in common dividends during the quarter. Its stated economic return combines that distribution with the $1.45 decline in tangible net book value. The calculation is ($0.36 − $1.45) ÷ $8.58, or approximately negative 12.7%. This issuer-defined economic return is not the same as a shareholder’s market-price return.

The release is a historical financial update, not evidence of a current stock-price movement or an assured future dividend. For a separate example of why accounting labels matter, see CapKet’s reported-versus-adjusted Truist earnings explanation.

The accompanying AGNC Form 8-K, Item 2.02, also records the $1.17 net loss and $1.28 comprehensive loss per common share, along with the $7.13 tangible net book value. This is the same issuer’s disclosure package, not an independent second confirmation.
